Sagmosavank Monastery, meaning “Monastery of Psalms,” is a 13th-century Armenian monastic complex located in the village of Sagmosavank in the Aragatsotn Province of Armenia. Like the nearby Hovhannavank Monastery, which lies five kilometers to the south, Sagmosavank is perched on the edge of a deep gorge carved by the Kasagh River. The striking silhouettes of both monasteries stand out sharply against the backdrop of the surrounding villages and the towering Mount Aragats.
History and Architecture:
The monastic structures were built by Prince Vache Vachutian and include the Zion Church of Sagmosavank (1215) and the Karapet Church of Hovhannavank (1216-1221). Both churches belong to the same type of cross-domed structures with two-story annexes in all corners of the building. The space beneath the dome dominates the interior designs of both churches, which is also reflected in the exterior forms of these structures.
The gavit (narthex) attached to the church was built by his son Kurt in 1255. The gavit is a large hall used for gatherings and religious ceremonies and is an integral part of traditional Armenian architecture from that period.
Location and Significance:
Sagmosavank Monastery is situated on a cliff overlooking the Kasagh River valley, providing a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. The location offers a tranquil environment suitable for meditation and prayer, making it an important place for monks and visitors alike.
Additions and Facilities:
The complex also includes a range of auxiliary buildings such as a library and a small monastery used by the monks for residence. The area surrounding the monastery features numerous stone carvings and khachkars (cross-stones), which reflect the rich artistic and religious heritage of medieval Armenia.
Tourism and Culture:
Sagmosavank Monastery is a popular tourist destination in Armenia, attracting numerous visitors from around the world who come to explore the beauty and history of Armenian architecture. Cultural and religious events are regularly held at the monastery, contributing to a greater understanding and appreciation of traditional Armenian culture.
